Building Faculty Community in Online Programs

This presentation will focus on how one online program engages with faculty to not only provide training and resources, but to develop a sense of community among faculty, instructors, instructional designers and program administrators. As online programs grow, it is essential that faculty are provided with training and resources to engage them in their online teaching responsibilities, ultimately leading to greater contributions in the classroom. This presentation will discuss several key elements we have identified as key to developing a sense of community among faculty, including the hiring of an instructional designer, providing training on pedagogy, information on best practices, learning management system and technical support, and continual outreach from program administrators about the program.
Speaker Bio(s): 

Lindsay Gaughan M.Ed, has joined the School of Social Work at Rutgers University as an Instructional Designer in August 2016. Lindsay holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Media Communications with a concentration in graphic/web design and a Masters of Education in Instructional Technology with a concentration in Instructional Design from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, as well as, two certifications as a Certified Instructional Technologist and Certified Faculty Developer. Lindsay is also an Adjunct Professor in the Masters of Instructional Technology department at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania where she teaches online courses for their master’s degree program. Lindsay has previously designed and developed higher education courses for West Chester University of PA, The Art Institutes, Brown Mackie College, South University, and Argosy University. In addition to designing and developing online courses, she has experience with assisting faculty with best practices and pedagogy, use of new/existing technology and the transition of face-to-face courses to online and blended formats.

Rachel Schwartz, MSW, is the Director of Online Education at Rutgers School of Social Work.
